Does a Website Really Need to Be Optimized for Search Engines?

Mar 3, 2018

Many business owners create a website and believe that’s all they need to do to attract customers. It doesn’t take long for them to ask, “Why isn’t anyone visiting my site?”

The reason no one is visiting the site is because Internet users aren’t seeing it in Google’s search engine results pages.

Think about when you are looking for a service or product online. You probably go to Google and type what you need in the search bar. What pops up are websites that offer your services and products.

Those websites have been ranked by Google according to certain factors. They offer Google’s users what they are looking for when they perform a search.

This probably makes you think, “But I do have what Internet users want, so why doesn’t my website show up in search results?”

This is where search engine optimization (SEO) comes into play.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the practice of using keywords that people type into the search bar of Google.

Let’s say someone is looking for a recipe for double chocolate chip cookies. That person will probably type in “double chocolate chip recipes”.

If a website has been optimized for the keyword phrase, “double chocolate chip recipes,” it will show up in the search results page.

Since there are thousands of recipes for double chocolate chip recipes online, only the best recipes end up ranking on the first page of Google. People usually don’t go to the second page of search results because they find what they need on the first page. That’s why it’s important your website ranks on the first page.

To rank your website on the first page, you must have the best double chocolate chip recipe. The only way Google knows this is by the behavior of people who visit your site.

The way to increase the likelihood your site will get ranked on the first page of Google is to:

  • Get as many people as possible to visit your site. You can do this with social media or sharing it with people in your community.
  • Encourage people to share the recipe online with as many people as possible.
  • As other websites to share your recipe, especially the link to the recipe on your site.
  • Add information to your site about your double chocolate chip cookies. The more information people have, the more they will be inclined to like them.
  • Include other forms of media, such as videos and images.

As you build the popularity of your recipe for double chocolate chip cookies, the more Google will notice and want to share your site with its users. Since you’ve optimized your site or website page for double chocolate chip cookies, Google will rank it highly on their search engine results pages, and more people will go to it. The more people that go to it, the more people will use it, share it, and of course, that will just strengthen the proof Google needs to either increase the position of your website on their search engine results pages or keep you as #1.

So, to answer the question whether you need to have your website optimized? Yes, you do. It’s not simply using keywords that your consumers are using in Google, but it’s so much more. You need  to use social media, other websites, and even people offline to get your website visible on Google.
